Most of us put in the diary each week when we are going to go to the gym or do a run or training bike ride - and we stick to it - don’t!
1. You won’t get wet!
At the time you have in your diary to work-out the weather could be rubbish or not what it says it was going to be! The number of times the BBC website has told me it is going to be a sunny day and I’ve ended up getting drowned on my bike are too numerous to keep count of! So don’t plan - if you are free and it’s sunny, get out there then.
2. Save a fortune.
Half the reason you have an over-priced private gym membership - that you don’t use anywhere near enough to make it worthwhile - is because you know you can go anytime - despite the weather. But if you only train when the weather is decent you should be exercising outside. It’s mad that you are trying to be more healthy and fit and do it cooped up on a machine in a closed room - get out in the world - cycle 30 miles in the country, not on the spot - run 5KM’s down country lanes - not on a treadmill! I can understand swimming - but there are enough council swimming pools you can use for that. Need motivation of an instructor? There are now so many of the army / outside park instructors, I’m sure there’s one near you. Working out on the grass in a park looks a lot more fun to me than working out on a mat in a gym with no windows!
3 You will get your work finished far quicker!
To be the most productive in your work you should be working when you are in the ‘flow’ - at one with the work in front of you - head down, not noticing your surroundings, getting it done well and fast - finishing it much faster than if your mind isn’t on it totally. But! the big trick to get the most out of life, is to stop (and walk away from your desk) the moment you are no longer in the flow - when you start looking on social media for more than a few minutes, when you start sharing pictures of cats, having a nose on a shopping site or just getting up and aimlessly wandering round to the kitchen for a break.
At that point STOP - and go and do your work out / training… as long as the weather is decent!
Don’t plan it - do it when you are not being productive at work and the weather is decent - you’ll get your work done quicker and find yourself doing and enjoying exercise more than you ever have before.
